The prostate cancer is on the third place among the carcinoid diseases that affect the human males around the globe.

Prostate is a sexual masculine gland that surrounds the first few centimeters of the urethra. There are two kinds of prostate affections:
  • the inflammatory affections: are infections that affect young men, below the age of 50
  • tumoral affections: are extremely frequent affections after the age of 50 is reached
Usually, the prostate cancer does not come with a symptom. In certain cases, there is some blood in the men's urine and there is also an abnormal increase of the number of mictions. During the advanced phases of the disease other things may appear: fatigue, anaemia and weight loss.

Although it is a deadly disease, the prostate cancer has well studied treatment ways that generated spectacular results.
In the early stages, the patient can benefit from radical treatment such as removing the prostate with the help of an operation or interstitial irradiation.
In the advanced stages there are some treatments that offer great results by reducing the tumour.

Because of the treatment efficiency in the early stages of the disease, the medical research has focused on finding new ways of precocious discovery of this disease. These are:
  • Rectal examination
  • It is a simple examination which helps detecting cancerous modifications of the more than 50 years old men's prostate

  • Prostate specific antigen
  • Allows the detection of prostate affections. The normal value of the antigen is 4ng / ml (4 nanograms per mililiter)

  • Prostatic biopsy
  • When the prostate specific antigen has raised values, the prostatic biopsy must be done in order to confirm the prostate cancer diagnostic. This means that an organ fragment is taken and it is studies at a microscope.

Things to remember about prostate cancer:
  • the prostate cancer is among the first carcinoid diseases worldwide
  • it affects men, after the age of 50
  • it is 100% treatable, if it is detected in the early stages
  • after the age of 50, every man should go to the urology and see a specialist
  • men that have had this kind of disease in their family (fathers, grandfathers) should go see a specialist at the age of 40
